CLAUDE MARQUIS
Ottawa Artist Painting & Music
Miscellaneous Artwork
Archetypes, Portraits, and the Works That Refused to Be Filed.
Not every painting belongs to a series. Some arrive on their own terms.
This is a selection of some standalone works spanning nearly thirty years — oils, acrylics and mixed media from 1994 to 2023. Mythological archetypes. Commissioned portraits. Editorial work. The artist in his studio or with his artwork. A portrait of the artist, by someone else.
Among the works: Buddha, Kali, and Valkyrie — three figures from three mythologies. A portrait of Voir magazine food critic Christine Moisan, posed as a birthday mother. Ceres, goddess of the harvest, painted as a wedding gift for Ottawa restaurateur Stephen Beckta. Contributions to Portraits of Bluesfest, the fundraising initiative supporting Blues in the Schools.
Editorial work includes the cover of Voir magazine's Hull-Ottawa edition, featuring MarQuis alongside Gatineau painter Dominik Sokolowski as two emerging artists to watch.
Also included: a portrait of Claude MarQuis by Ottawa artist Stephen Frew, painted in the tradition of Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon.
